Fri 14 Nov 25 - Dapoli to Guhagar
Distance: 49km | Ride Time: 2h 54m | Overnight: Guhagar (Shantadurga Beachside Home Stay)
15-31Deg and hazy, no wind
Walking around Dapoli yesterday we saw a compact bustling town with a lot of stores and convenience stores, unlike other towns we've been to so far. With its nearby beaches, historical temples, caves and forts scattered around, Dapoli is becoming a popular tourist destination for Indians. Unfortunately we didn't see any of these sights. The town is also known as Camp Dapoli, as the British had their military camps here. This morning bag drag and breakfast was at 07:30am, and we rode away about 45 minutes later. Today was another lumpy ride, and my legs were feeling the effects of the increased riding long distances up and down steep hills, and hot conditions from the past few days.
Today was more rural backcountry riding with a rollercoaster of short, sharp climbs followed by equally steep descents to the coastal town of Guhagar. After the descent into Dabhol (about 30km) following the second climb, we had a light snack and cool drink before catching the Dabhol ferry across the Vashishti River. Riding off the barge, we instantly began another tiring climb over the hills. Thankfully it was a relatively short ride today, and when we arrived at Guhager we stopped for lunch where we had a tasty Thali platter. Another local delicacy, consisting of staples like rice, roti, and papadam, with dhal (lentils), and vegetable curries and other condiments.
After lunch, it was only a short 4 km ride out of the village to our overnight stay at the Shantadurga Beachside Home Stay. I was awake at 04:00am again this morning, so by the time I checked into my room, I was feeling very tired and sore, and a quick nap was in order. Afterwards, Greg, Ken and I went for a wander down to the beach where we watched local fishermen go about their business, then launch their boats for the evening fishing expedition. Back at my room after some stretching and a happy hour drink with the group outside, we had a very tasty dinner and shared birthday cake with Khila (Mike - the tour operator's wife).
